Default 9" rear

Ok I'm about to say the four letter word, Ford. I'm thinking about putting a 9" under my car because thse stock rears are just pitiful. The noise and slop is pitiful. I had it tore down this weekend and when I put the axles back in I gave them a shake and the play they have in them is pitiful. I was reading somes posts on here earlier and saw alot of people have trouble out of noisy rears. Mine did the same from day one but not real bad. I always thought it was something loose in the suspension but now that I've been inside mine I see why it rattles and bumps and knocks.

My questions are has anybody made the swap and how easy is it? I know I'll have to swap spring perches, shock mounts, control arm mounts, panhard rod mount and fabricate a torque arm mount and mounts for the brakes, but does anybody know if there is a certain year model to look for as far as the width of the whole unit? If I dont have to narrow it any can I just get my axles redrilled for my wheel pattern? Is there anyway to get the reluctor ring on one of these axles to keep the ABS working?

I used to have a Moser 9" with 4.30's and a spool. I ended up driving on the street, and let me tell you the spool sucked. I ended up getting a 12 bolt. There really is no modifying to get the aftermarket 9" to bolt right up, doing the torque arm was kind of a pain in the *** but thats about it.

I just recently built my own Ford 9" and if I had to do it over again I would probably just buy one from one of the sponsors (Will just bolt right in). If you have the means to setup a jig so you can put the brackets back on exactly how they need to go then it's really pretty easy. I used Jay Billingsly (He's a sponsor on this board) to take care of all the essentials (tq arm mount, axles, brakes, gaskets, etc..etc...) and he really came through for me.

I did end up building a much better rear end for my money than I would have been able to buying one (for the same money) but you definitely need some technical "know how" before you dive into a project like this and fortunately I had a friend who provided the skillz I was lackin'...

I bought a Moser 9" for the F car and it bolted right up. Needed to fab a little to get the brakes to fit but that's expected. All the mounts were there and all the factory suspension fit. Just watch about aftermarket stuff. Some fit and some don't. The BMR torque arm I have fits nicely.

How do you tell if it's a 9"?? I have a tag off one, I can't read the first number off the second line, could be a 3 but I'm sure it's an 8 meaning it's an 8": it reads WES AA 9FB 8(or 3).00 9 952A. Also to the ford guys, would a Galaxie 500 with a 390 cid have a 9"? I know where there are two and the guy would give them to me if I wanted them. Plus if it doesn't have a tag on it is there a way to tell if it's a 9"?

The 9" is easy to distinguish because it doesn't have a cover. It's solid across the back and has bearing retainers for the axles instead of C clips.

Found a site that deals with identifying the different 9" rears. And my friend was wrong, it's the 8" that looks similar, the 8.8 has a rear cover.

Now I learned something new. I didn't know there was a baby brother to the 9". Whatever the case, I spent about $1500 on my rear. Bought the housing and axle package from Moser. I found a center on Ebay set up the way I wanted and got it. I believe it was worth the headache of fabrication.

Talked to a ford "expert" today at work. He said the way to tell if it's an 8 or 9 is if you can get a socket and extension on the bottom 2 bolts it's an 8, if you have to use a wrench then it's a 9. Also, the older 9's were more round with smaller tubes, kinda weak and not much good, the "good" 9's are more triangular and the hump on the back is very pronounced. I think they were made from '77 on, but could be wrong about that. Just thought I'd post that in case somebody asks the same question in the future.

Found a junkyard today that has several complete rears for $75 a piece so I will be making a trip to the junkyard this weekend. I would love to have a nice moser rear but I'm on a budget right now and do have the skills to fabricate everything needed, plus I just like building things!!
