Bearing questions......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am planning on doing a LE 3 head/cam package on my 93 z28. I would like to be able to spin my engine out to 6800rpms on a daily basis. My first question; Would replacing the main bearing and rod bearing while I have the heads off help out? if so, what are some good main bearing and rod bearing? My Second question is about the cam bearings... Is there a tool that allows you to pull these out through the front of the engine while the engine is still in the car? I have checked out http://www.streetillusionsracing.co...all/Cam/cam.htm, and whomever wrote this definetly didnt replace them and I also was looking into the service manual and it only mentions to inspect the cam bearing when removing the camshaft and to refer to the "engine out-of-car" section for removal. How do you even measure cam journal to bearing clearances the manual doesnt even mention anything about this, and the obvious is you can't use plastigauge with this like you can with the two peice bearing on some OHC motors.

I have not wrenched on a f-body but after doing one cam swap on my LT1 Caprice I can tell you for the next one the motor is comming out even for just a cam, so I would definetely pull it for bearings. I also think you are doing the right thing by wanting to replace the bearings, the car is not exactly new anymore and they bearings are the closest thing to a weak link in that bottomend.

Yeah, the way i learned it, you ALWAYS replace the bearings when doing a cam swap, its too bad that they dont make some kind of puller so you could just pull them out through the front of the motor instead of pulling the whole motor out of the car to get them out.
