Yes, it will work with an 89 trans, i have a 88 trans out of a truck in mine......It more or less works like a hall effect distributor, so instead of a mechanical linkage to the speedo, it gets an electrical signal

I think the speedo issue will be the least of your worries, You should find out what you would have to do with the electrical signals that go to the solenoids in the valve body, find out if you can have your computer re-programmed without them. Remember pre '94 700r4's didnt have the solenoids.

Im not really worried about the signals. My 700 is all mechanical, along with my complete motor. They are basically stand alone, im just looking for a way to wire up my stock speedo and how to keep the lockup feature of the tranny.
