Default Need assistance adjusting rockers.

I recently had a new motor installed but somehow the crank hub wasn't set up with the arrow at the 12 oclock position. Since I can no longer use that to determine TDC what would be the best suggested alternative? I tried finding TDC by first watching both lifters on the #1 cylinder, as they went completely down, then adjusting the rockers 1/4 turn past 0 lash. I then followed the instructions in chiltons as they showed which rockers can then be adjusted while #1 is at TDC. I then turned the crank 1 full rotation and adjusted the remaining rockers.
When I started the car, the lifters were making an awful racket. The motor was running extremely poorly, causing me to have to shut it down. What could I have done wrong? I've done lifters a few times before with no problems. I'd hate the think that my brand new lifters might be bad.

i had this sort of problem today. both rockers up and arrow was at 12 oclock, but it wasnt right. to make sure. have a buddy bump the key, and stick the tip of your finger in the #1 spark plug hole, when you feel the compressed air rush by your finger, set the arrow to 12 oclock. thats how i did it, and when i got it running. i set them while running. back them off until a loud clatter, and then turn another 1/4 turn, very slowly. and the lash will be set.
try that and let us know how it works
