Default engine temp

i bought my car 2 months ago and not long ago i found out that the previous owner put in some lil mods on the car. my lil problem is that my engine temp gauge only shows up to 165-170 degree and sometimes after racing it goes up a lil and i can hear the fans turn on. i have a friend iwht a 97 ss and after driving his car for approx. 20-30 mins his tempature gets up to around 210 and the fans turn on. i cahnged my engine temp sensor and it still goes up to around 165-170. my problem is im not sure if it happens to alot of f bodies and if this is normal or did the previous owner put in a thermostat that opens up at lower temp.

Sounds like the previous owner put in a lower temp t-stat. That's one of the first mods most people do. Also sounds like he had the ecm tuned to make the fans come on earlier. Yer friends car sounds like it's stock. The factory t-stat and fan settings allow for the car to run hotter, I believe for emissions and mileage.

I wouldn't call it a problem. If the car is on the hot side of things, then I would call it a problem. If it's on the colder side of things, consider it a plus.
