Default LT1 cams rounding off the lobes?

Does anyone know about stock LT1 cams rounding off the lobes? I heard about this and thought it was weird since it is a roller cam.

should not happen unless you have seriously over tightened your rocker arms.

I would think the lifters would tear up first. Just something I heard about. Faulty LT1 cams. Don 't know if it is true.

Maybe it was in reference to the old LT-1 an early 70s flat tappet motor, because it is not a problem with the LT1. The closest think I have heard to a flat lobe in an LT1 is one solid roller cam had some issues but being a solid roller you can bet this was not your average LT1, and the other was a fragged lifter damaged a lobe. I frequent as in every day 2 b-body forums and 2 f-body forums and to at least some degree have done so for several years now. I do not know everything but I do have a good handle on what is and isn't common and this is not common.

ive seen it, but it was a roller L98 so same thing as a LT1 in that respect. dont know how the place that built the engine managed to do this. i think four of the lobes were destroyed. one had the lobe grind down smaller than the base circle of the cam. it was bad really bad. the lifters didnt look that bad though. they were destroyed and knarled up, but compared to the cam they had minimal damage.

over tightening the rockers can do it. using a non roller cam with roller lifters will do it too. beyond that i dont know.

No, it was a new LT1. I was talking to a guy at the parts store, said it happened to is 97 SS. The cam journals wore out too. I thought it was kind of weird.

Here...just for you guys...

Never have seen a bad stock Billet cam.... BUT.....

224/230 ex-treme

I have now seen two cams look like this. I only use BILLET cam cores from now on. My last cam was a 230/230 comp (mag lobes) on billet core that came out perfect after a few thousand miles

Holy CRAP!!!!!!! What happened to that poor cam? Did someone forget to put oil in the motor?
Looks like the lifter just dug right into the lobe. Jebus!
Were there any warning signs when that happened, or did you even notice the engine running differently?

Cam had been in the car for maybe 1k miles....I'v tried lots of cam/head combos over the years and this was the first, I'd seen, have now seen a 306 grind with same issue.

Were there any warning signs when that happened, or did you even notice the engine running differently?
Oh yeah, started hearing a metal, kind a tink, tink sound....Sounded like tin metal being tapped on...weird.....So, I had to go and see what was up and that is what I'v found.....Like I said, no more NON BILLET cams for me...On a sad note though it took out my Comp "R" lifters

Dang. Sorry to hear that. I'm gonna be paranoid from now on though. Oh well, as soon as one cam goes, it's a perfect time to try out another!
