Default speed density

who has converted from mass air to sd?
what power levels people are at when they convert over.
what is involved in the conversion.

just wondering because i have heard that the stock maf is only good to about 450 hp and keep hearing horror stories about aftermarket maf's

Mine makes 475 at the wheels, and SD mode was only worth 5 to 6 hp, and that was only above 6000 rpm. I ran it both ways at the track, and SD mode knocked MAYBE .003 off my et. A lot more work with VE tables, etc, when you go SD. If your not close to 500 at the wheels, I probably wouldn't bother to do it.

Good luck, Ed

I use the big plastic 85mm MAF from a late truck or Vette. It was worth almost 4 hp above 6500 RPM over a bone stock LT1 unit. Doesn't work as well with a blower, however. I never use a butchered, sorry, I mean "ported" MAF for anything. Ditto aftermarket ends. No air straightening vane in the middle of those to help stabilize the air flow, so it can be metered more accurately. Other than removing the screen, which is no big gain either, I don't feel like the MAF should be modified at all. Unless your car spends a lot of time well over 6000 rpm, you won't see much at the track with the 85mm LS1/LS6 MAF. I shift mine at 7200/7250, and it drops to 5800 at the gear changes, so it stays over 6000 a good bit of the run. If not, I can't see doing it. Dyno numbers don't mean anything, if it doesn't go down the track quicker, right? We don't race dynos.

Good luck, Ed

I put down 700 rwhp with a ZO6 maff. I actually converted from speed density to mass air for drivability purposes. Like Ed said.....the VE tables are pretty hard to conquer on speed density. I will be converting to the FAST or DFI systems hopefully this year which are both speed density units.
