strange idea
What about a destroked LT1? Is there a crank out there that I can just swap in that would put the displacement at like 327 or something around there? I was thinking about a billet steel crank and ARP Rod bolts with some high quality bearing so this motor would see 7K+ when I get on it. Car would have home ported LT4 castings, LT4 intake, and a cc306 cam w/ 1.6 rrs, LT's, true duals dumped. Is there anyway I could get away from having to machine the block? Will the stock rods and pistons handle this RPM?
Also, the car will be gutted pretty much and should weigh under 3300 with me in it. Opinions?
The 306 isn't the best cam choice for autocross.....remember, you're going to want a cam that has enough low and midrange for coming out of those tight corners.
Destroking is all well and good but it sounds like you don't want to spend much money and building an engine that is going to spin high "can" be a spendy venture.
If you don't have a large budget, I'd load up on the suspension mods and keep the stock displacement. Pick a cam that is going to match your needs and your head flow #'s. Don't fall into that common mistake of buying parts because they are the rave.....I've said it before and I'll say it again, the 306 was a good grind in its day but there are much better off the shelf grinds out there and most importantly you should match the cam to your heads and your needs. Don't get a cam that's all top end when you're really going to need the low and midrange torque. And don't trust stock parts if you're going to be putting a lot of stresses on the internals.
