Default Cam Question (sort-of)

Okay, so I have been looking at cams and I have a few from Comp in mind that I would like to get. My question is when you look at a cams specs and it tells you the obivious like that you need a computer tune and stuff, I understand, but what does the part about having improved intake plenum and runners mean? Do they mean a whole new intake or what? And if so, would there be any major drawbacks if i didn't do the plenum and runners? My situation is that I want a decently large cam, like the CC-306 for example, and my plans were to in the near future, have some headwork done. I just wanted to know if the head work would be sufficient or if i would have to do more. Thanks for the help in advance guys.

By Improved intake plenum and runners they mean increasing the airflow through the intake, most likely by having the intake ported (assuming you already have the supporting bolt-ons such as a cold air kit/ larger throttle body). They do not mean replacing the whole intake plenum. A cam is supposed to be chosen in correspondence to the flow #'s of the heads, so if you plan on getting your heads ported in the near future I would look into a heads/cam (ported intake) package from Lloyd elliot Advanced Induction or Combination motorsports...all sponsors to the site. I'm not saying that the cc306 will not work with stock heads, because it will and many people run that cam with stock heads and have great results. Having the head work done, along with the ported intake are NOT manditory for a cam swap...but are reccomended for getting the most HP out of the combination. Hope this was some help. good luck

Well said. While the ported heads and intake are not required to run a larger cam like the cc306(my heads/intake are stock and I have the cc306) you will not see the full potential of that cam with out them.

Ok, thanks guys. Yeah, I knew that I wouldn't get the full potential out of the cam, but I had just never really heard of the terms plenum and runners before. And one more question- when you say "Ported intake" do you just mean the area where the TB bolts to the intake?

Hey Formula94, are the mods that you have in your sig the ONLY thing that you have done? Those are great numbers!

Depending on what size TB you have, yes... the 58mm tb is too big for the stock plenum, and therefore the plenum has to be ported to match the size. Also when the Intake is ported the person doing it ports the passages inside, and leading into the heads. This is done to make the transition between the heads/intake almost non existent. Heres some pics that might help

hope this helps
