clutch problem?

clutch problem? lately whenever I come off the clutch, if i put the gas pedal down any farther than for slight acceleration, the rpm's will just shoot up to about 5k almost as if the car is in neutral, but then my speed will slowly increase until it matches the normal speed for that rpm. the only way im able to accelerate even some what like normal is when i downshift, then wait for the rpms to jump up and match the speed, then i can give it more gas. a guy at checkers summed this up to the clutch going out. I bought a new clutch anyhow becuase I am still building up the motor. But some other friends of mine say that it might not be the clutch that is the problem. It's not like the shifter pops into neutral when i slam on the gas, it just takes forever to get going. can anyone help me shed some light on this subject and has anyone had a similar problem? Any help appreciated
