Default $4 grand to spend... hmm

Hey all, I have a 95 Z28 witha 6 speed. It will need new paint eventually, but I'll wait until I can drive better with the car to do that.

I have saved up around 4 grand and I'm wondering what performance upgrades you guys think I should do with out going Heads or Cam or a turbo. I think thats to much of a hassel to do.
I have an SLP C A I on the car right now, and it will need new tires and a new clutch (hard to shift into 6th).
It has 70 K miles, and I am just going to hold onto the car and rebuild in high mileage.

What about selling it, put your 4k with the money you get from the 95 and getting an LS1 powered vehicle? That's what I'd do You'll be much faster out of the box!

oh and ps ... if you need paint, slap a maaco job for $500, and try to sell the car for 5k ... you'd then have 8500 to play with and there are a few ls1 powered cars for around that price.

I have a Procharger P600B with the LT1 bracket/kit and intercooler that would make a nice addition to the car.

Haha
I wanted to sell the car for a LS1 Trans Am, but I decided against it. Then I wanted to sell it for a vintage musclecar, but that won't work either. Im 16 and insurance isn't friendly, I need a car that doesnt need fire an theft.

$4K is going to go quick. Here is what I would recomend

Lloyd Elliot LE2 H/C package: $1700
LT Headers: $285
52MM TB: $330
Injectors (36 lb/hr):$400
Fuel Pump:$300
Rockers, Lifters: $300
Tuning:$600
Miscellaneous:$200-300

Rough estimate $3915. Thats just a rough estimate. Here is Lloyd Elliot's site

Here's a couple options for ya:
1. forged lt1 396 shortblock with splayed main caps
2. do an ls1 conversion which is what I opted for when I had 4Gs+ last year.

buy a 12bolt rearend with whatever gears you want
buy suspension parts, lower control arms, torque arm, panhard rod
then buy some headers and a catback
if there is money leftover buy a hotcam kit and go racing

Maaco paint jobs look good in the dark or from 15 feet or further back. You get what you pay for, and in my opinion it would be a waste of money to get a maaco paint job, and thats just something you shouldn't do to a an f-body.

I would go for a 12-bolt and start on the bolt-ons. If you're going to build the motor when it gets to be more of a high-mileage vehicle, that's a good step in the right direction. If you're planning on keeping the car for a bit, then getting rid of it for an LS1 or another newer vehicle, I'd go with Metalbeast's plan to get the most out of it right now while you can.

WTF since when did this forum become LT1/LT4=buy a ls1....I hate when people ask what mods to do to their lt1 and people say buy a ls1...Rant over

If you are gonna mod it later then get the things now that you will need..
12 bolt/9inch
rear control arms, panhard bar, subframe connectors
Headers and cold air intake..
You can buy a complete cam kit for under or around 700.00 from www.cmotorsports.com that includes rockers, cam, gaskets, timing chain, pushrods etc...
Alot of the above suspension parts can be bought used too
when I had a cold air, headers, and cam kit my car ran low 12s at 113-114

Get a 6.0 truck block, 6.0 heads.. Basic pocket porting, bronze guides.. etc..

Look for deals on intakes in the used market... A stock one for now.. or maybe a alum like a weiand.. a used LSX is a needle in a haystack... Something cheap can be resold for what you want later...

Comp cam, lifters... can be done later..

howards rods $750...

Wiseco pistons... $500

I'd slowly build an engine searching and holding out for the best deals... Even if you get a newer car instead odds are you will be pulling and building it up...

IMHO just do a swap and learn how to paint and prep in shop class.... put a built engine in..

Later just yank the engine and put the stock stuff back in then swap the built LS1 into the car of your choice..

well man i just spent $4000 on my car i took it to my local machine shop and got a rebuild. got it 355'ed, mid size comp cam i think duration 212 and 218, port heads all the rebuild componets you know forged pistons, opti, wires, thermostat, a better timein chain, and more. but yeah you should go ahead and rebuild, my motor with 128,000 miles it built up bad sludge and was in bad shape i guess my car wasnt given a nice life by the previous owner. they said i have 370 horsepower so its good. i just told you my story for inspiration

Thanks for the responses guys.

I was thinking about going with posi traction and 4.10 gears
hooker lts
and a good cat back.
Then repaint it.
How much do you guys think a repaint would be?
And a good posi unit that I should look into?
