Default Safe mods to do on a 195,000 mile LT1??

Alright my motor just tipped 195,000 miles... I plan on eventually rebuilding it, but I want to get some basic stuff done to it before then so it will take to ported heads well. I only have an e-cutout right now... And plan on saving for some LT headers/y-pipe as soon as I get another job and have a bit of $$ in the bank. I'm also going to get a CAI(probably Moroso) and a new intake elbow(mine is slightly ripped, just temporarily sealed for now).

I wanted to know if it would be safe for the stock bottom end to handle some 1.6RRs(maybe even 1.7?) with hardened pushrods, new springs, and a hotcam? I won't plan on revving it over 6000rpms, so should I be fine?

Also a computer tune will be done.

edit: forgot to mention... from about 30k to 190k the car was used solely for highway driving by the previous owner, so I think that could be why it is still even running

I wouldnt open up a motor with 190k miles on it and not rebuild it. Bolt-ons should be fine but a cam swap is gonna be pushing it.

Are RRs considered bolt ons?

I just don't want my motor to as soon as I swap it in.

I hear other camaro guys saying that 100k is the limit on a cam swap. Is that true or is there no limit?

The limit has a lot to do with the past matenience of the motor. I personally did my swap at something like 122k and its still running strong at 147k. Id owned the car since 80k and knew the previous owner who owned the car since 25k so I felt safe doing that cam swap. If the LT1 is taken care of, it will last a long time. Its a great little motor.

So i hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love my LT1. I dont know alot about the previous owners but i got the car at 126k and its now 135k, i would love to swap the cam but i dont know about the condition of the car, so at this point im just doing boltons.

if you are really conserned about the condition of your motor, do a compression test, and a leak down test. If it fails ether of these then don't open it up with out rebuilding it. but if it passes both with flying collors, don't be afraid to swap out the cam and not rebuild it.

The previous owner had owned like 7 other Camaros/Firebirds before mine... So I think it's safe to say he was an Fbody enthusiast and knew about all the little quirks and things to look for in them...

I'll get a leakdown and compression test done once I get the money, thanks for the suggestion!

Dude I'm 17 in highschool... That would get like... 6mpg

I'll probably go for all the bolt ons then rebuild it as a 355(maybe forged, not entirely sure how I feel about FI and nitrous...)

I wouldnt want to swap a cam with that many miles. However these motors are awesome when taken care of. Mine has 163k, it holds oil pressure like the day it came off the lot, and traps 100.5 in hot weather with only a catback.

I would not do a cam unless you change cam bearings

Or main bearings

on my 96 B4C I had 123K on the bottom end and i put a cam in, next day spun the main bearings, well it was just my reason to put a bigger cam in and stroke/bore it to a 383

Thats a lot of miles on the bearings to change the cam

IMO

Well... just buying bearings would be much cheaper than new everything else

What would that probably cost?

Do you know how hard it is to do cam bearings on the engine while its still in the car? Close to impossible.

If you got the motor out and want to do the cam bearings, save you so much time, money and frustration just rebuilt it completely.

Best bet i'd say for you
