Default LT1 engine number???

I am getting another LT1 for my 1994 Trans-Am. I called this place that sells rebuilt longblocks with a 3 year, 100,000 mile warrenty, and they said that they need an "engine number" off my old engine. I told them it was a 1994 LT1. . .but they claim there were 3 different kinds of LT1s made in that year.

Does anyone have any imput or suggestions to this? I'm going over to the place tomorrow to have a little talk with them.

Well, all lt1s 2 and 4 mains had the 327 number on them. L99 which looks like an lt1 from the outside doesn't have this number.

then I wonder why they would need the number. . .if they all had them.

I was talking about the block...the 3 LT1 engines would be the iron headed motors for the b & d-bodies, aluminum heads for f & y-bodies. The y-bodies had 4-mians. All off them had 327 on the bock.

So really they don't need a number. . .if I already told them it is for a 1994 Trans-Am? Or am I not understanding something?

I should just tell them: 4 bolt main, with aluminum heads.

I went talk to them in person. . .

They said I need the "block number" before I can do anything. They had "3 different LT1s" for 1994.

the only numbers on the LT1 block are 327 including the corvettes that got the 4 bolt main. maybe they need it to get you the right heads or something but thats all the info you can provide off the block. i was under the impression that all the LT1 f-body blocks were the same.

Now they are telling me that they number ISN'T on the engine. . .rather the door of the car. . .or near the windshield.

are they wanting your engine as a core? they may just want to make sure that they are getting back what they are selling you. You can understand them not wanting any old 350 block in trade for an LT1.
if you just want them to work on your engine it would not matter. if they are being this difficult before you even become a customer **** 'em. you don't need that kind of aggravation.

How does everyone feel about junkyard engines? I know it would be a lot cheaper. . .but is the chance worth taking?

what are you plans with the motor?? to buy it a rebuild it then it shouldn't be a problem, but if your gonna just throw it in then without knowing it's historu it's not a smart buy.

Parts stores sell reman long blocks for cheap that would be worth looking into.

I brought the engine to the shop for them to look at this past week, and the first thing the guy told me is, "I don't know nothing about engines!"

I told him, "Well, I'm sorry. I'm wasting your time, and mine."

I did find the block number though. . . 10125327. It was covered in dirt and grime. Found out it is a "Caprice LT1". I also happened to find another Caprice LT1 for $500 bucks nearby. The only difference is that my old "Caprice LT1" has alluminun heads on it. I thought they are suppose to have iron heads. Which are better?

I'll use this one, until I have the funds to completely build my old LT1.

But stock wise. . .alluminun vs. iron which flows better?

And with the heat soak. . .a factor, which is overall better?

Iron is said to flow slightly better but the later lt1 aluminum heads with cast #561 flows the same. Should you consider heat soak...more heat in the combustion chamber is more power, why are high performance motors have coated chambers, valves and pistons. Thats why aluminum heads run higher CR not because the can but because they have to. I don't think there's any advantage to aluminum other than weight and the fact they come with crew in studs.
