Default Running the LT1 without a serpentine belt?

gonna take the LT1 out for a final bracket race this weekend, and needed to know..other than no PS, having to run a charger on the batt., and not having the annoying squeal from my AC Compressor's bearings (whole reason Im doing this), what else will I lose....

water pump isn't belt driven, so temps should be fine....everything should run like normal, just no accessories, right??

AND NO ALTERNATOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what mods you have done, But if you set up has a high demand for vlts. Then Doing so could casue problems.
But if you have a brand new battery , I think u should be fine. Take it off and take her up and down the street real quick.

[QUOTE=96SCTA]AND NO ALTERNATOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[QUOTE]ya, like i said, i will have a battery charger at the track with me to keep the charge up on it....i think it should make it from pits, to the staging lanes, down the track, and back w/o probs. my setup isnt anything crazy to need tons of voltage.

I've always had problems with the car missing at high rpm's when I took the belt off, even with a relatively stock motor. Your results may vary though.

For bracket racing I vote leave it on, only take it off if looking for a new personal best. The lower voltage can play games with a number of things on the car the ignition and injection being the more important ones.

Charge it between rounds and you will be fine. You dont lose that much voltage in the short times you are talking. I know guys running 7 series ignitions, nitrous, superchargers etc. without alternators.

I never run a belt and I spray. You should pick up .15 at least. I've made 3 runs in a row without a belt (with parking lights on) with no problems.

I tried it a few times and would consistantly pick up a .1 and 1 MPH. But it is a hassle to remove/replace it at the track.

But here's my racer's secret...the big drag on the belt is the alternator more than anything else. I learned I can leave the belt on and unplug the alternator so that is free-wheelin and pick up the same .1 and 1 MPH. A few TPI Corvette guys taught me this. I tried it on the dyno and picked up a solid 10 ft/pounds down low and 9 RWhp.

Of course, your results may vary. Good luck.

that's very interesting. I might have to try that as it's a pITA to remove my belt with my cold air box.

i've heard of guys putting a switch in for their alternator so you can take the power out of it without even getting under the hood.

I don't have a underdrive pulley and I bought a long thin serpentine belt removal tool.
It's not that hard. I've done it so many times, I can do it in the dark. Mustang 5.0 guys pick up .30 and 3mph.

I picked up .15 and 2 mph in back to back runs by taking the belt off on a friend's '97 Z28. On the dyno, I picked up 10 rwhp and 12 rwtq.
