Default LT1 overheating... little bit wierd. Help

OK... my car only does this in stop and go traffic. If im on the interstate the car is loving life.

It is a 96 LT1 trans am.

I checked all three relays. All good. The 2 fuses are good. All grounds are good. If i jump the relays, the fans kick on. If the car is running, and i umplug the engine coolant temp on the water pump (so the PCM thinks the car is like 300+ degrees), in a short time both fans kick on.

Other wise the fans seem to never turn on. I can watch my gauge go to something like 230 degrees... and occasionaly it will creep back down to 190's. So im thinking the ECT sensor is bad.

What else can i do to figure out why my coolant fans are not turning on? And is this the sole reason my car could be over heatings in stop and go traffic? Does it douns like a ECT sensor?

THanks

NIck

The fan settings are really high stock. you can have them lowered or get a manual fan switch. also turning the heat on with the defroster seems to help. turns the fans on and uses the heater core as a small radiator. my car does the same thing.

Nope that's normal. The stock tune does not turn on any fans until 226.

The absolute cheapest way to fix it would probably be a mail order tune. Check out pcmforless.com or madz28.com. I think either of them will do it for about $50 if that's all you want changed.

Most likely yes. Mine did the same thing. Lowered the fan settings and now it never gets over 180 no matter how long it idles.

Get tunercat, it's alot cheaper. You'll have to have a cable to hook it up to a computer too.

Actually Tunercat's ODBII package includes a cable, it's more expensive though ($380). Still a better deal than Edit though considering it's not VIN locked.

Yes you can get LT1edit or Tunercat. EIther one is going to be a lot more expensive than a mail order tune (Tunercat ~$380, LT1edit over $500 with a cable) but you obviously get the benefit of being able to change a lot more things and being able to do it however many times you want.

how much of a learning curve is it (tunercat/lt1 edit)? I mean, at the end of this year when i go to build my motor it would come in handy to have.

Im willing to drop the cash if you think i will be able to teach myself so that it will actually do me some good! lol.. thanks!

It's not really that difficult once you play around with it some and do some reasearch on it.

There's a lot of good lt1 tuning info on camaroz28.com.

well one question i have is why in the hell are they still using serial cords on that tunercat? that is old old stuff. Some kid of f-body.com fried his PCM... they think it had somethign to do with the slow and inreliable transfer rate of the serial cords.... bummer...

but thanks for the info... if i dont go with a mail order tune... i'll have to get tuner cat or something. I wont stand for my car even getting near 210 degrees.

Well it's a serial data stream from the computer, so a serial cable is the most obvious choice. You can get other ones though. I use a USB cable with OBDI Tunercat.

It's definitely worth it. The idle/low speed behaviour is 100% better when it's not burning up.

You can always do an OBD1 conversion if you don't have to do emissions testing. That's the cheapest route if you wanna do it yerself. Tunercat for OBD1 is around $90, get a 94-95 ecm off ebay for around $50-$100, then whatever the cable costs.

yeah... we dont have a sniffer here. But i do plan to move in a year or so. And where i move probly will.

The biggest thing with tunercat is that i feel that i won't be able to do anyhting but those few simple things like speedo calibration, speed limiter, and stuff like this fan thing. I don't have ANY experience with anyhitng like it. So it is a completly new experence for me.

and how much total am i looking at for everything i need for the tuner cat on OBDII?? $300? least it says that here http://www.tunercat.com/tnr_desc/Pricing.html

I had no experience when I got the OBDI version about two months ago. I already know what about half of the tables do.

You also need the OBD2_08 definition file. That's another $80.
