Default alternators suck...

my damn alternator went out today.kragen want $190 for a new oe alt.but i dont want the stock 124amp...i want a 140 or so.what would you recommend for after market or oe?thanx all

Don't know about your area but there's a great local shop in my town that rebuilds them great. Saves you over a $100. I imagine if I needed such an upgrade they could do it at the shop.

I had two alternators die on two different F-Bodies.. they are a huge PITA on these cars.

you could always rebuild your own. takes less than a hour and 10 bucks in parts assuming only the brushes are worn...usually the case. if you have other huge loads then you probably would have to buy a higher output alternator. im not sure if you could just replace the voltage regulator with one from a high ouput unit. might wanna ask about that. voltage regulators cost about 45. i rebuilt mine earlier this year and have had no problems what so ever with it.

I've had the same one on mine for 5 years with no problems.

I'd second the rebuild option. Sleep Hollow Rebuilders did mine on my Vette a few years back. Saved a lot of money.

We usually just take ours out.....no lie, good strong battery and we just remove ours for racing purposes!! nice weight reduction at the same time!
