I have a 96 Trans am. My new 383 motor has about 7,000 miles on it now I got the car from anothe guy I have only put about 1,000 of those miles on it myself. I changed the out as soon as I got it with Mobile 1 10w-30 Synthetic. I checked my oil the other day and it is barely touching the the end of the dipstick
There are no oil leaks and it only smoke a little during acceleration and it runs fine. Why is it burnig so much oil? It does have High compression pistions (11.5:1) could that be why? Do I need to use a thicker oil or something?
Please Help.
Thanks,
Adam

Have the heads been re worked because if not it's probably the valve seals. But if I were you I would use the same oil, thicker oil would probably do more harm than good. Does Your car smoke at idle?

M1 10w-30 is VERY thin for a 30wt. and nowhere near as good a choice for the LT1 as people are lead to believe. If M1 is your pick try the 5w-40 or 0w40 other brands 0w-30 can be a great choice like Castrol Syntc and Amsoil for instance.
If I were you I would put a basic dino in for a littlewhile and run it fairly hard, if it is the rings that might help seat them. Contrary to popular belief a new motor SHOULD NOT be babied and doing so can inhibit ring sealing. Beyond that yeah I think you are looking at pulling things apart.
