Default Cost?

What would you say is the average running cost for a used complete lt1 block with the full rotating assembly? Basicly a good place to start for a rebuild?

I ask this because I was going to order the factory vette shortblock for my new setup that SDPC sells. They used to advertise it for 1700.

I'm now thinking I bet I might be able to come close to that price with something better. So I think I might be able to wing it and build a budget 355 for my new plans.

So what would you say the average running cost should be for a complete lt1 short block?

Thanks

Hey Mike, I would think it would be in the range of 3-500 for just the short block. Of course the price would reflect it's condition and milage.

keep in mind though that the vette block is also a 4 bolt main, lt1's and lt4's in the vette were 4 bolts, lt1's in the f-body were 2 bolt so that may make a difference in the price

Thanks guys.

Yep, I remember reading that the vette blocks were 4 bolt mains as well as the LT4's.

B-bodies used the exact same shortblock and go for a whole hell of a lot less from the boneyard. They have iron heads but the same intake so depending on your topend plans and what you were going to use for heads this might be a good place to look. If you are looking for a core set of aluminum heads too then maybe concentrate on the f-body used stuff.

On the 4-bolt studded two bolt or hell even bone stock 2 bolt LT1s will hold a heck of a lot more than "conventional wisdom" would lead you to believe. IMO if you plan to get radical enough to actually warrant 4 bolt then look into aftermarket caps and machining a 2bolt block for them.

Thanks for the info, I totally forgot about checking the B-Body forums. Know of any good ones? I would like to pick one up locally, but if the price is right, I'll look outside.

Thanks Again,
Mike
