optispark is there any way to tell if your opti is bad other than changing it and seeing if it helps.....my car sputters like it is running out of fuel right before it shifts but the fuel pressure is good.any help would be great.
bad opti if when it cuts out does the rpm guage jumps up and down and backfire thats how mine done. after the 5th or 6th factory opti replacement i found one from dynatech called the dynaspark the replacement units are suckey and don`t last. the dynaspark is about $600 but worth ever penny it a better performing piece

Either that, or you can be patient, unlike Me. And wait for the MSD Pro-Billet Optispark Replacement, which is supposed to be the best unit avaliable. It even has adjustable timing on the distributer.

My Z28 I sold a few years ago is having a similar problem for the person I sold it to. I drove it recently and after driving it hard for a while it stutters etc..the plugs and wires were replaced shortly after that and it did not solve the problem so we have come to the conclusion it is the opti spark. The guy I sold the camaro too is selling it next spring and I am curious as to how much in labor it will cost to get the opti spark changed, I figured he should replace it before selling it. I found a new ac/delco opti spark for $260 is this a good price. He is short on money so Im just trying to see how much it will cost him to get it fixed. Thanks!!

well seeing as though you have a 96 you cannot rule out the CPS crank position sensor they go and the car will shudder as if you had the car in 4th gear at 10mph,these sensors are on 96&97 Lt1 cars,if i were you i would get the car scanned first since its OBD2,the opti is not very hard to do and since you are there you should replace the cps too.good luck!

my favorite way to test the opti, is with a timing light, put a tdc mark on your crankshaft pully with a marker, or a piece of tape. when you are testing it, if your opti is bad, then your mark will be all over and or spuratic not fireing every other rotation.
has worked every time for me, on mine and others that I have worked on.

I bought it thinking I was going to run my car last year well my new motor took allot longer than I expected to build didnt get it runing till to late in the season to even get it out and I just upgraded from a stock recalibrated pcm to a big stuff 3 dfi and the only ignition system the guy from bs3 uses is a ls1 coil per cylinder setup with a crank triger and a cam sinc dummy didtributor I was hoping he could wire it in with the delteq but they recomended me going to coil per cylinder per the amount of hp and nos I will be spraying.So I am selling it and buying thier setup thanks.
