Default How strong are the blocks?

I was wondering how strong the 2 bolt main blocks are? I'm doing some research on building a motor and I need to know if THe block will handle.. say 700+ HP also i was wondering if you can make a 2bolt block to a 4 bolt?

the block has nothing to do with it. It is the mains on the crank. If you put the right fully forged assembly (crank, rods, pistons) with 4 bolt mains into a LT1 block there is no reason you can't handle over 800hp. The cast iron LT1 block is extremely strong.

The 2 bolt and 4 bolt blocks are the same casting it is a matter of machining. There are guys who have gone to that HP level sucessfully with the 2 bolt usually studding it rather than bolts. For that level though I would recommend splayed aftermarket caps be fitted, the cost is minor compared to what it will take to make that power or the consequences of having a failure which could easily wipe out the whole block, rotating assembly and even damage heads.

So THe very best thing to do is find a lt1 vette block.... I read some where that is was only the 3 center mains that are 4 bolt.

All 4-bolt main 350 blocks (gen I and II) have only the 3 center mains that are 4-bolt.

No, as I said the 4 bolt LT1 blocks are the same casting it is a matter of machining to add the outer bolts to a 2 bolt block and doing so with aftermarket splayed caps is better than the Vette parts.

Here's what an LT1 looks like with 4 bolt splayed mains.... (this is my block with pro-gram engineering 4 bolt main caps).....

outside bolts go into the block at angles. You can 4 bolt the outside caps but it is pricey.... and kinda unneeded.... another thing you can do to strengthen the block is use block filler and do a half fill up to the bottom of the waterjackets. We're setting up mine this way and plan on taking it over the 1000hp mark....

A properly setup LT1 with 4 bolt mains and the right bottom end components will be good to about the 1000 hp level before block failure becomes an issue.

George Baxter just had a 4-bolt main block had 1200 hp and was the world's fastest LT1 running Low 9's with his 383 with a Vortech.

My VRE 383, with AFR heads, and a D1SC is just a standard 2-bolt main.

Combination Motorsports Impala has gon 9.4 at 141mph on a run it list it's blower belt at the 1000ft mark, don't know what they have done to the mains but it is a boosted 383 LT1 with a BBC snout on the crank for the blower. The real kicker race weight of 4242lbs. If the fastest LT1 really is low 9s in a f-body then this without a doubt would have to be the most powerful.
They are using Trickflow heads because SOME people are begining to realize AFRs nowhere near live up to their reputation, others are stuck in the PAST when they were an upgrade over gen1 heads, but this aint a gen 1.

Ok maybe I'm missing the point, but I'm pretty sure the World's Fastest LT1 belongs to https://www.horsepowerengineering.com/shop/

8.21@170MPH (385ci LT1 I think?)

OK that sounds more like it. I thought low 9s seemed slow for the fastest LT1 seeing as what the CM boys are doing with a b-body weight half a ton or more than most race f-bodies.

Hey he did say that George Baxter WAS. The block will take it Big Ricks is Grouted 398ci. LT1 put down 1500hp and it ran 8.08 @ 174mph at HRP last year during FFW test and tune.
