Actually sir, that is not the case. I was describing the function of the fresh air hose on the passenger side valve cover, and indeed checking the FSM the function of the Fresh air hose is to let air in the Throttle body from the VC and let air out of the TB into the VC. I can scan the page if you wish

Sorry man, I thought you were referring to the picture that I had linked from shoebox's page. You are completely correct on the fresh air hose on the passenger side valve cover that goes to the TB. I must have just misread your post.

I've had one on my car for 3 years now. I've never had any problems with idling. The hose on the passenger's side valve cover is also dry. No oil seems to be getting up here to the TB. it did before the valve cover breather was on the car though, so installing it seems to have stopped oil from going up this tube, similar to what guys say the Deutsch filter does. I have had no problems with the breather.

so far after the deutsch filter no more oil in the intake tube so far. when i pulled it off the first time it was oily as hell. looked gross, and the tube was cracked in the back possibly letting air in. think that was a performance killer?

So I have to ask, has anyone seen any gains from doing this? I understood the whole thing at the begining of this thread about oil reducing the octane of fuel, but again does it show any gain?

Oil in the intake causes detonation. If you have no issues then you really have nothing to gain.

The cracked hose I feel was allowing unmetered air.

Which leads me to my next question, how would you ever know you have detonation with a knock sensor? other then if you have a scanner or diagnostic software. I've never heard my car ping, even when I ran it on 87 once...

If the the pcm and KS are doing thier job you should never hear detonation. It should pick up knock or pings way before we hear it and pull timing to prevent damage. Ive been told if you run a low octane fuel itll run in low octane mode.

Exactly! So again, how do you tell if its pulling the timing due to the oil? Or pulling the timing period without a scanner?

You dont. Detonation is detonation. No computer can sift through and be smart enough to know which is which. If this was the case we wouldnt need LT4 KM's lol. The only way to know if youre detonating from oil is to remove your cai, open the t/b blades and look in the intake manifold itself for oil. If it's getting in there youll see a nice film. I'm sure it effects the exhaust smoke as well. Get a Scanmaster. If you owned one it would keep you out of the dark and make your PCM your buddy and not your enemy. You can see how many degrees of knock retard youre getting plus ntons of other things to let you know what your car is thinking.

Thats what I figured, was just wondering if anyone knew of a different way to find out without useing a scanner. Thanks for the info.

I assume your referring to the Deutsch BF412? I could only find it at Autozone. The Purolator breather filter B23165 is the same thing for 2x the price (still only $4).
