Default Brodix heads on my LT1

I am in the middle of building a 383 LT1 . and the guy building my motor is a very knowledgable person about engines. i told him I want about 400 to 450 to the ground. i was thinking about going with LE2 package. but he wants to go with brodix heads . and not sure about the cam. I trust that this person knows what he is doing. i am just a little scared about putting brodix heads on my motor just because i have never herd of anyone doing it. feel free to post your input about this. or what the best route would be for my motor.

Brodix can work but by the time you are done not only making them work with the reverse flow but also figuring out an intake and such you will be spending a whole lot more money that you would with ported stock castings.

Both Advanced Induction and Lloyd have a pretty good track record of being able to deliver topends capable of over 400rwhp IF you keep your end of the bargain and give it the supporting parts it needs.

Most people not specifically familiar with the LT1 will not give the stock castings the credit they are due I think that is what you are running into.

Give Lloyd Elliot a call even if it is just to gain some knowledge. He will point you in the right direction.

For your power goals, a Port Pros set up, LE3 or AI package could get those numbers.

There is no AFR 225's for LT1's.... only 215 RR's, 227 LT4 Race heads, and the 210's.....

For most street apps, go with the 195CC AFR heads...

Tell your engine builder to order you some 195cc AFR LT4 heads.... competition ported.... you won't be disappointed.... they aren't cheap but they will outflow hand ported LT1 heads ported by anyone short of jesus himself....

Ah you are correct sir, I'd like the 227's . Outlaw what's your opinion on em and hows the car coming along? Mine ran a 7.0 @100 spinning(1.7xx 60ft ouch) the other week. Got new MT DR's 275/60/15 so I can spray outta the hole. Hope to hit the 1/4 mile next week for at least a 10.9xxx.

i forgot to add one thing. the reason why i was going to go with an LE2 is because my car is going to be a daily driver . i dont know if this changes anything. but i appreciate all of the input. so what I am getting is that yall are saying not to go with the brodix, correct me if i am wrong. just trying to figure it out.

SBC heads will require a lot of work to make em work right, if you were going all out then yeah great idea. There are plenty of other heads that can get the job done for less coin.

Even most blind AFR supporters will tell you the small port ones(under 210) are less than impressive and AFRs own porting sucks. If you must go with aftermarket castings I know LE, AI and CM all like Trickflows, CM is using them on the fastest LT1 Impala known to the big b-body boards.

AFR earned a good rep years ago but has not kept up and still that rep persists despite often mediocre results .

I'm not a big fan of any AFR LT1 head smaller than the 210's. They just don't flow too well unless you invest some $$$ in hand porting. The 210's and larger do pretty well with just the AFR CNC work.

The small port ones might not make the highest flow #'s and yes you can get a stock LT1 ported head to outflow em but at the cost of velocity... velocity cannot be measured by a flow bench.... and can you ensure a hand port provides the same flow port to port??? everytime??? with the AFR CNC setup you are ensured even flow to every cylinder... and good velocity.... flow #'s are sometimes misleading.... case in point my old stage ii LT1 heads..... 258cfm at peak on intake and 203cfm exhaust at peak.... low to midlift #'s weren't that great either... HOWEVER, they did 422RWHP on a 355 with a T56.... same heads that i got to run 10.40@131 on a 150 shot... I've seen guys with heads that flow 280+ (supposedly) and they ran slower and dyno #'s were worse... (and that was with more cubes!)... Velocity thru the port is just as big a benchmark for power production... IMO I think flow #'s are fluffed as an advertising strategy..... I could go hog my heads out with a dremel and makes the ports huge but the car would probably fall flat on it's face.... I looked at my 227's out of the box with the AFR CNC Port and they look and flow awesome.... the ports are cavernous to say the least....

I agree with what turbo6 says.... they take more time with the 227's and 215's/210's.... My heads took 16 weeks from order time to delivery...

227's are great if you're building an all out racing LT1.... the only choice other than the 215RR if you have the cash... Trickflows are also great if you have them done by a company out the box.... I have new progress pics in this forum i posted last night. go check em out... yeah put those DR"s on and spray the hell out of it out the hole.... you'll get that 10....

This is why i went with Advanced Induction. They have just as good if not better flow #s than all the other porting companies, yet they do it with almost 20cc lest port volume.

if i were doing Brodix heads i would do the 18* heads that do not require special pushrods or lifters. Have them converted. THey flow in excess of 320 cfm BEFORE porting...

can you imagine?

I sent Loyd Elliott Bare Trick Flow castings and he done a great port job on them. Stats on the heads are: 2.08, 1.625 valves.
Here are the Flow numbers on the heads:
.2 144/111
.3 202/146
.4 248/179
.5 279/201
.6 294/216
.650 296/222

They flowed great. I highly recommend Loyd Elliott. His work is some of the best i've ever seen.

A basic flowbanch can not tell velocity but any reputable porter will have more tools than just a basic 20 year old flowbench and can be suprizingly repeatable on flow BUT there are a handful of shops out there CNCing LT1 castings with great results, like 94greencamaro posted about Advanced Induction they are getting 175cfm out of a 190cc port with 2.00/1.56 valves and the car on thier home page put down 490 and still climbing at the rev limit through an unlocked 8"ATI ProBuilt 4L60E on those heads. Which since they are CNC are exactly the same as what 94greencamaro there bought.
