Unhappy Question

My 96 WS6 is slipping between 2nd and 3rd (A4). I had to drive it the other day against my will to get to work. Wheen I was driving home it almost sounded like the gears were grinding. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem before but I would like input as to whether I need to replace the gears or what route to go. Thanks
