Default Noob here with a newb question

I just bought an LT1 and M29 for swapping into my 1988 RX-7 and the guy I bought it from said that it was getting close to it's maximum reliable capacity with just intake, midlength headers, exhaust, and tuning. That doesn't really sound right. I've heard that the T56 is pretty damn durable, but I would like to know for sure. I searched a bit, but didn't find a straight answer, so how much power/torque can they take? If I eventually went 383, would I need to replace it? Thanks.

T56 is pretty sturdy...as for reaching maximum reliable capacity...I laugh at that because I had all that you mentioned and never once had a problem...But as for maximum power...Cant really give you a number because some people drive different...You shouldnt have to replace it for the 383...

Okay, thanks. He was pretty much under the impression that had he put on his custom heads and cam, he would have needed to replace the tranny. He expected around 450bhp from that setup, so I don't know. Also, what kind of 1/4 mile track times would a '93 Camaro with those mods be looking at?

As for track times...It varies...13-14 seconds...The tranny would still hold was he was talking about the 450bhp...its about um...350-380ISH to the wheels give or take 10-15 to be generic.

the M6's to me were under rated... i have seen lots of abuse out of stock gears... the stock gears can hold to around 700 hp... there are some weak points in the T56, but there are weak points in everything.
i have the M29 in my car with i have more mods then what you have listed and no problems here... its probably time to do some upgrades to the tranny but its still going with no problems...

What kind of upgrades, short of sending it off to get rebuilt, are you referring to?

well all the upgrades have to do with a rebuild... like the steel 3-4 shift fork, carbon fiber syncro's... billet struts... and the most is the output shaft upgrade...
here is a site you can check out for future reference...
