Default 4L60e Problems

Ok heres my problem I bought my 94 z28 and it had a late modle 98+ 4l60 out of an s10 in it. When I frist got it the VSS was not hookeed up and it wouldn't go in frist or 4th gears. Now I have the VSS hooked up but it still wont go in 1st or 4th gears. My queston is. Is there something wrong with the transmisson or is it incompabilaty with the PCM and the transmisson?

Does it not even have manual first? Or no first when in the D4 or D range? No manual first, could be big problems. Could be shift solenoid problem, sediment in valve body, low reverse clutch problem, tons of things. No 4th could also introduce a band or servo problem, or 3-4 clutch pack problem, but that usually goes with no 3rd also. If you have 2nd gear the band may be okay. Dunno, may wanna go to good tranny shop.

It has no manual first. When pull the shifter down into first it will take off in 2nd. And then you have to maunaly put it in 3rd and it will stay there. unless you pull it back down to 2nd. I just want to make sure its in the Tranny before I have it built.

4l60 is a 700r4. What confuses the heck out of me is the years. I couldve sworn the last year of the 4l60 was 93. I think you need to find out if the VSS is the same from 94 to 98.

the transmission is in 'Limp home' mode. I would start with checking to see if it is plugged in. Seeing how the wrong unit is in there Lock-up probably won't work.

I would start with making sure the trans is even plugged in. there is a 2in or so round connector on the passenger side of the transmission the should be plugged in to control the trans. Once you are sure that is plugged in scan it and clear codes. If you get a bunch of codes then I would check for blown fuses

Good luck!

BTW yes VSS changed in 96 but the are compatible

When my transmission started out in second gear it was my shift solinoids. I also could not go into 4th gear. I replaced all the soliniods in the transmission and it worked fine than.
