Default Cam Tech Please...

I know this is a VERY deep subject and one that cannot be simplified into a small post. However maybe someone could explain to me the effective difference on the motor between these two cams I was looking at in summit. The CC306 and CC503 both claim a power range of 1800-5800...However the specs are quite a bit different. The specs are as follows. the CC306 : 230*/244* @ .050" .510"/.540" and the CC503 : 224*/230* @ .050" .503"/.510" ... What effect would each have on the motor?

are u talking about how much wear and tear on valvetrain parts there going to do or how much power, lope, driveability your going to get?

All things I guess. But mostly just trying to understand how botuh claim the same RPM range, yet are different. One must peak different than the other? I assume the higher the lift the more wear and lope?

The RPM range of a cam is effected by a lot more than just those specs listed. The LSA also plays a part, althought those two cams are both a 112 LSA. Comp also lists the CCA-07-466 cam with that same RPM range and it's a much smaller cam. I am by no means an expert, however, just wanted to point out that you can't simply look at duration and lift when determining RPM range. Do a search on google, there are some great sites out there explaining everything you would ever want to know about cam design. Also, the RPM range will be slightly different for every engine as well. It depends on tuning, valvetrain, bottom end, and plenty of other things. Basically you want to find a cam that will work well with all of your other pieces and parts of your ride. And yes, higher lift does have an increased wear effect on valvetrain components, but I believe the ramp rates of the cam lobes are also very important pieces of that puzzle. Best thing to do would probably be to call Comp and see what they reccommend and maybe even get them to grind you a custom cam. Good luck.
