Default 396 LT1, Burning oil question.

asking for a friend. He has a 94 Z w/396 LT1. Other than that he does not know the entire specs of the motor. He bought it a few months back and the guy couldnt tell him exactly what all it had. Anyways, in the past week he has burned 1qt of oil. He has spoken with other people (no one ASE certified just people) that say this is quite normal for this type of motor. Is It normal?

Thanks in advance.

no, its not normal to go through that much oil in a week regardless of the size. possibly bad valve seals or guides, bad rings, or just a really bad oil leak somewhere under the car. might want to do a pressure check on the cylinders or a leak down test. let us know how it goes

Most stroker motors are going to use some oil. Unless he's really raggin on it, that's alot in a weeks time. Do a leakdown on it and post the results. Does it smopke out the exhaust? If so, what color?

I dont know what intake it has on it, I've never seen the car (its my friends son's car). As far as smoke I dont know that either but he says the tips of the pipes look like they have oil on them from time to time.

I had a problem with my LT4 inatke not setting right with my LT1 heads and it was causing me to burn a lot of oil and makeing the car smoke real bad and the exaust tips look nasty.

Deffinitely have him do a leak down on it and see whats shakin.

My 396 is high on the oil consumption scale, and it burns a 1/2qt per 2 track outings. Thats when I am really givin her the wood too.

I have never heard of the problem that WickedZ mentioned with the LT4 intake not seating well with LT1 heads, but hey stranger things have happend. Afterall I am only an engine guru in training, I still have much to learn
