Default Canton oil pan. So much fun.

Well as my winter project slowly progrese i finaly came to the point in the build up where i get to put my hooker headers on. Well another suprise to me the headers hit the oil leavealing sensor. So i had a good idea. I was going cut the nut at the top and solder the wires directly to the sensor. This would have given me enogh room. However i made the cut about 1/4 of an inch to close and to make a long story short i am now just pluging the hole. This is the second mod i have made so far. The first one was i had to cut the dip stick down to make it work. My last concern is with the power stearing. I KNOW that somthing else will have to be modded to make it fite right. Any one else go through this yet. Maybe you can save me somtime. Another question for any one running hooker header with mufflx y pipe. Did you have any problmes with this before i install mine on my motor. Im installing everything then slaming the car on to the motor...thanks for the help..

I had some problem with my Canton pan as well. Yes it will kinda sit on the steering rack...you can use some washers and shim up the motor mounts a little bit to get some clearance, it doesn't touch it that bad. I didn't have problems with the Hooker Long Tubes on my car but I have heard that the DynaTechs will not fit with the Road Race pan because of the kick outs on the side. If you have a early Canton pan and you have to cut the dipstick tube DO NOT put the dipstick in while the motor is running...just cut it off and use it as a plug and keep one in the back to check oil with because the crank will grab it and tear it off (don't ask how I know this). Canton just started a new run of pans this past summer I believe that have a resessed oil level nut, a redesigned pan so that the dipstick fits and a higher front sump area to clear the rack, but as far as I knew the only person to get any of the new pans in was Nick at Nu-Tek since he was the one that told them where to change it at.

so you say i can use some washers to help make it not hit the sterring rack. Does the fact that i got an aftermaket k-fram from bmr help the situation at all.

Not really sure because I have the PA Racing K member in my car and it still hit the steering rack. I have all kinds of room between the K and the pan, its just the damn rack that hits.

just put my 396 together with the canton pan. tring not to cut the tube and haft to carry the stick in the car i came up with a fix. on the side that is going to slide next to the pan, take a bench grinder and grind from the bottom that goes into the block to about 1/2inch from the stop, cut it reel thin but not thru it.be carfull. then take it and install it. the side that was ground will fold over on its self and clear the pan. my dip stick goes in and out easy and i now can keep my dip stick where it belongs.
