Default coil to opti wire

whenever i pull it off of the coil, the copper electrode has carbon on the tip.. and right now it has a little chunk of it on it. is the coil doing that or what? it has a split on the boot end about 1/4", but i RTV'd that and its holding. the carbon is causing a miss/stumble.

anyone have an idea what would cause carbon buildup on it?
