Default Totally lost!

Well i recently just replaced my optispark wtih a new one and it still has the problem with mis firing and still smokes black out of the tail pipes. i was wondering if it could be the plugs or wires. it does not misfire when cold, but has trouble climing rpm's so if anyone would know what the trouble is i would greatly appriciate it.

CHeck the plug wires, vs the optispark diagram.

Make sure all plug wires are whole, none of them are burnt.

I just skimmed the replies, and some of this will be a respost, but let me lay out my advice:

1. Check all plugs and wires Ensure no plugs are broken and no wires burnt. Also ensure no wires are crossed (!). Had a buddy "helping" me once cross my #2 and #4 plug wires.

2. Test your ignition coil.

3. If none of the "easy" stuff works, you may have to bite the bullet and pull the new opti off and ensure it was not installed wrong. On a '94 you still have a spline drive. Make sure the dead spline is lined up with the appropriate hole in the cam and the appropriate hole in the back of the opti. You would think it's hard to do... but years ago I myself installed my opti with the splines not lined up. Was really pissed as I had to spend 1/2 the next day redoing the job.

Good luck.

I have found best to always replace plugs and wire's when doing the opti,I have found that before the opti goes out it produce a high voltage spikes and overload the wires,I had some that the wires where pierced by the voltage overload.

Just a thought here,.. your mechanic gave the car back to you like this without any recomendation on what could be wrong? If you paid for the opti replacement through the shop, thats a good chunk of change and I would ask that the mechanic check his own work. At least change the 02's to see if that fixes it and if not, hold on to the old ones as spares and go talk to your mechanic.

my friend changed his optispark too but it wasnt put in right on the pin that sticks out of the cam. so the rotor was spinning all retarded and he had alot of misfiring and smoke.

We got an OPTI changed out in 1 and a half hours, no bull..lol
That's was an idea when my car was giving me crap, we thought the Timing was off. It's running now though..

As far as your problem, it sounds like it could be Timing, but bad wires or plugs also might be mixed in there. A reference for when the Timing is off, you will have some wicked back-fires, I have seen it.

Look at plug wire on 7, especially if you have headers.

If you do get enough suggestions that it's the o2's don't go with bosch. GM only. I've heard nothing but bad from those that have gone with just the cheap bosch o2s from their local parts store.

you can check and see if it is really the o2's by unpluging both of them from their harness. It will force the computor in open loop and then after a while when the engine heats up you will know if it is fact the o2's or its another problem related to heat.
