Then you need to find a bolt small enough that won't thread into the crank, but long enough to go all the way into the crank. You need to do this so the puller presses against the bolt, if you don't use a bolt it will just press against the hub therefore just presses onto the crank, I hope this makes sense.
With that said, I only pulled the hub the first time when I didn't know better. It's a bit harder with the hub on and you can spend quite some time before you get everything lined up right, but it can be done with some patience. Sometimes you hit it on the 2nd try, sometimes on the 23rd. It all depends. i've not noticed a significant difference with or without the hub.

Is this a good shopping list for the swap?
- Power steering pump (mine seems to be dead)
- Power steering fluid (hope the stock pump can use ATF... this is what the Volvo uses)
- Coolant (green since that's what is in it now)
- Belt
- Loctite (which kind?)
- Gaskets: Pump (did the original pump use gaskets?) & Timing Cover (mine is leaking)
- Simple Green
