This is where I'm at. Did any of you have a problem clearing this for the msd install?...

If you are asking about installing a new msd opti you will be fine with the hub still on.... is that what you were asking?

Well I'm just having some trouble lining the MSD up properly because of clearance due to the hub. Can I just pull it off? Or how does it come off? I'm not mechanically dumb, I'd just like to know the proper way in doing things..

You need some type of puller I use one similar to this, harmonic balancer puller.

Then you need to find a bolt small enough that won't thread into the crank, but long enough to go all the way into the crank. You need to do this so the puller presses against the bolt, if you don't use a bolt it will just press against the hub therefore just presses onto the crank, I hope this makes sense.

It's harder to do with the hub piece on but doable. I used 1/4 ratchet (I think 3") extension and a puller to get mine out. You have to watch out some 1/4's are to tight in the hole, nothing a grinder can't fixed.

as mentioned, you can get a longer bolt that is smaller in diameter, I want to say three inches is plenty but it's been about a year since I pulled it and the equipment is sitting in storage currently. I use a three jaw puller despite some recommendations and have never had a problem.

With that said, I only pulled the hub the first time when I didn't know better. It's a bit harder with the hub on and you can spend quite some time before you get everything lined up right, but it can be done with some patience. Sometimes you hit it on the 2nd try, sometimes on the 23rd. It all depends. i've not noticed a significant difference with or without the hub.

Opti install complete It was done a few days ago but I've been waiting on my PCM from Ion which came in today. Started right up, bled the system, now just waiting for my roommate to follow me on a couple WOT runs. Car sounds good with the tune too

Three months later how do you like the MSD Opti?

(I have one just gathering parts to install.)

Thanks!

Opti is great, not a single problem. In fact I just trapped 116 at the track last night on a 100 shot with 1st gear locked out and granny shifting. Haven't even cracked a valve cover

I could make a new post, but since this one is already here:

Is this a good shopping list for the swap?
  • Power steering pump (mine seems to be dead)
  • Power steering fluid (hope the stock pump can use ATF... this is what the Volvo uses)
  • Coolant (green since that's what is in it now)
  • Belt
  • Loctite (which kind?)
  • Gaskets: Pump (did the original pump use gaskets?) & Timing Cover (mine is leaking)
  • Simple Green

ZFan88: were you able to get the Opti on without pulling the hub?

Ya, went on without a problem. The hub just has to be turned the proper way. It's not equal spacing between the three ends, so you just find the larger spacing and turn it to put the opti on, it's real easy. I didn't change anything else, so all I needed was coolant and gaskets. Buy some shop rags while you're at it

I got mine on with Zero clearance problems, I left the hub on too, you just have to rotate it. Make sure you take the Cap off the Opti then it should mount up.

Hmm...I didn't take the cap off when I put the opti on, but I was carefully in lining it up. Maybe that's why I didn't have a problem with the o-ring lol..because I did it before I put it on the car
