Replacing engine/tranny in a 93 Z28...

Replacing engine/tranny in a 93 Z28... Where would be the best place to lay my hands on an engine/tranny for a 93 Z28? The car is an LT1 (obviously) with an automatic transmission. I was hoping to swap out the engine and throw a manual in it so that the car would be a little more fun.
Im not familiar with Fbodies so Im curious as to how hard the manual swap would be on a car that was originally an auto. Also, are their any cheap/inexpensive mods that can be done to the engine before I put it in (cam, heads, etc) that would be worthwhile?
The engine thats in it now sucked up a buttload of water. My Dad took it to a dealer just to see if they could figure out whats wrong with it and they said that it needed a new engine.
What exactly could be wrong? Think it would be better to pull the engine out and fix it up?
