lt1 torque converter
lt1 torque converter hey im planning on getting a high-stall torque converter and was just looking for some input on what my stall speed should be. no major mods to the motor, and right now its got the stock 2.73's but i have intentions of putting 3.42's in it very shortly. also what kind of of 1/4 mile ET differences am i looking at with a high stall converter??? trans is a rebuilt 4l60e
go with 3.73s and 3200 rpm stall and youll see your et drop like a sum bitch. im not gonna speculate on times because its not just going to depend on those to factors. you have to think about tires too. so i would expect you to see your 60' go down to about a 1.7-1.9 at least and for every tenth you gain in your 60' you pick up 2 tenths at the end of the at the end of the track. so gears + stall + MT's= recipe for success
Do 3.73s FIRST. Then save your money, because a stock rebuilt trans is gonna die with a high stall helping cook it.
When you have a trans built for performance, get a 3200 stall. I LOVE mine... but I also have a built trans, AND a 36000 trans cooler that is NOT enough for the stall. GOT to keep it cool to keep the trans in one piece, and the stall will NOT help.

^^^ Yes a stock trans will die if you dont properly account for the extra heat that new converter can and will generate. I've seen a lot of stock transmissions do just fine with added stall... Cheesshhh

I say wait till the tranny pops becuase if it does 99% of the time the converter gets contaminated.
As for rear gear thats a whole nother different story, I say never put a dime in it, and only if you have to i.e. break it.
how very untrue.. As long as you havent damaged your trans beforehand, like I said I know many people running stock trans (with shift kits) and high stall TCs just fine. A smaller diameter stall is actually beneficial to a trans anyways 
I have a 3400 stall, a B&M 24k trans cooler, and the very fine TransGo HD2 shift kit. I could not be more pleased, and trans temps stay relatively cool, even under power conditions.
Oh yeah, and a Strange 3.42 in my series 2 carrier, with an AT girdle. No problemo, up until now. Been running the Strange for 8 years, BTW.
