Check it to see if it smokes (black running rich-needs tune or plugs and wires; Whiteish blue- needs rings)

I bought my Lt1 with 115000 and the timming chain broke like 1000 miles later. The valves hit the pistons and bent all push rods. At least i had a reason to build a new motor. Not to sure how to check for this, maybe if the timming is jumping from slack in the chain.

thanks man, overall you should definately be able to tell if something is wrong with the car, of course being a 12 going on 13 year old car it will have its minor bugs but those are easy to fix. just make sure it doesnt have major problems

Just test drive it, you should notice common things acting up... I mean if there's something wrong with car... if not... You should notice a big grin on your face replacing that 3.4L

One very common thing on trans am or firbirds that usually goes unnoticed is moisture in the taillights!!! making the sockets and bulbs fail when lighted... plus having faded taillights!!!

Geez 5-6 hours for the opti install? It took me a total of 3. First time change. It went REALLY smooth for me. The longest part was bleeding the cooling system. I do not account into my time.

To answer your original question what you should expect? Well if the current owner knows nothing about the car. I'de expect everything! I went through it with my Formula. 69k miles. Everything was original. A month later it went to hell. The previous owner told me it was "babied". More like, "neglected" They are my neighbors too. Get it throughly checked out before you make any serious decisions about purchasing that car!!
