wierd coolant question
wierd coolant question I just got my car back from the body shop and pulled into my apt lot and smelled coolant. I expected that due to no colant overflow tank.
I pull in to my spot and hop out and see smoke (coolant steam) coming out from under the hood so i pop it and there is coolant pouring out from somewhere in the waterpump area. uper and lower radiator hoses are both hot (so not stuck thermo correct).
i then open the radiator cap and as expected a huge glut of coolant sprays out but it is really brown. do i need to replace the water pump and then have a shop do a coolant flush.

What was the body shop doing? Try to see where it's coming out by the water pump. Looking at the motor from the front, the lower right water pump bolt is a drain bolt...make sure that's there..

the way i have done it in the past is to take the bottom radiator hose loose from the radiator andlet the coolant drain out from the hose. Then take the radiator cap off and take a water hose and stick it in the radiator cap opening. start the car and turn on the water. the car will need to sit and run for about 10 minutes or at least until the water is running clear from the bottom radiator hose. Also be sure and keep an eye on the temp guage while doing this. I had done this on older vehicles but not on a lt1 car. so if there is a better way than this go ahead. good luck.

On the drivers side of the block there is a drain plug, and the knock sensor acts as the drain for the passenger side. On the passenger side of the radiator, on the lowest corner there is a drain plug too.
Drain all the coolant out, remove the thermostat and flush with a hose in the thermostat housing, being careful not to get the Opti wet.
