Default Ignition Problems??

Hi Guys,

As my name implies, the car is 94 corvette with a very mild 398 stroker(410/412).

Just had a little mishappening last night while trying to stay ahead of the GT500 by a car and a half. Around 6500 RPM at the end of fourth, I heard a loud pop out of the exhaust and the motor just died. I slowly cruised to a stop while waving at the GT500 guy who promptly waived back. Now when I crank the motor, the motor turns and at the end of the self, I start hearing pops in the exhaust but it won't start at all.

My dilemma is to figure out what has happened. I had just replaced the original Opti with the MSD unit and I would be really disappointed if that has let go. I was originally having some ignition problems which had caused me to buy the MSD unit only to find out later that the source of the problem was my 6AL or the attached retard unit. I had then bypassed my 6AL(running on stock ignition) and was mostly fine except few misses past 5000 RPM. But last night it just gave up as I mentioned earlier.

Any help in diagnosing what could have gotten messed up would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like the opti let go. That is exactly what has happened when mine have gone out. That truly sucks that it is the MSD opti, I feel your pain I have put three new GM optis on my new motor since March and I have to pull the one on the car now also. I am going to go with the dynaspark opti instead of the MSD. Call them guys at dynaspark they are super cool guys and they are very helpful they are the opti gurues.

Thanks bud (CBR CRZY) for youre response. I myself thought about the Opti as well. As long as I have the warranty on the MSD, which I do as it is only 2 months old, I will try to reach out to them to take care of me. But it is a pain to pull it every time.

Would love to hear any other opinions as well before tearing that SOB apart. Thanks for your time!

Pull the positive side cable off of the battery and leave it off for a few minutes, then reconnect it and see if it works. If it does, you may have experienced a transient condition in which the ignition lost its firing order due to a weak signal.
