Default Lt! Block Help Please!!!!

Hello All

I need some help in a hurry! I stopped by my motor builder to see if my engine build had started or not. He said they had just put it up on the mill and was getting ready, to get started. I asked to take a quick picture and when I got there I found a 638 casting number. I asked why it was not a 327 and he said he thought they were the same.

Here is what I found!

V8 5.7 L, 350 CID
Roller cam, 2-bolt main, TPI, block #148,548,638, cast iron head # 810,191,193.
Block Casting: 148,548,638
Crank Casting: N/A
Head Casting: 083
and this!
14093638...350...87-95...2 or 4...Roller or flat tappet cam, one-piece rear seal
Will this block work as an LT1 LT4 set-up?

I told him that I needed to find out if it would work and to hold back...

ANYONE????????????

Thanks
Ross

No, it looks like that engine came out of a 87-92 F-body with the L98. It WON'T work as an LT1!!

Yeah, pretty sure. If the front of the block looks like a standard SBC, then it's the wrong one. A standard SBC has 2 bolts on each side holding the waterpump on, an LT1 has 3 per side!

The LT1 does not have provision for a fuel pump.

Will anything other then a 327 cast number work for an LT1?

327 is an LT1, anything else is not. There's another one, cant remember the #, for the small bore/small stroke 4.3liter LT1 look alike that you'll want to stay away from as well.

If its any other casting #, the timing cover, water pump, and coolant passages will not be correct.
If your engine builder doesnt know this, it just means he's never done an LT1 before. Either educate him or find someone who doesnt need an education to get the job done. The motor is still basically a 1pc seal SBC on the inside and back.

Know of 3 casting numbers. One for the 5.7l (LT1) is 327. Then there is a 4.6l (L99) that was in roadmasters and what not. Then my fav. of all the race blocks. Will get the casting numbers after I get home.

First, it was a 4.3L, not 4.6. Second, what are the supposed 'race blocks'??

He could be, but they aren't rare by any means, and I certainly don't consider them 'race' blocks! . They even have the same 327 casting number on them.

oopsy on the 4.6l

And not at all talking about the corvette blocks. They where used for some trans am cars and mules. They have a lot of changes from the 327 casting. NO oil filter flang/machine area. There is only 2 holes one is oil out the other is oil in. bores can go to 4.155. and a few other things.
Will try and post some pictures. (how to post pictures)

Yeah but its set up for dry sump oiling! Ive never seen or heard of one of those. Any more info on it? Theyve gotta be rare as hell if the majority of us have never heard of them. Id like to get one for the sake of holding on to it.

That and it's got a block heater in the rear core plug. The knock sensor is also on the left side, where most of the time they are on the right.
