Why wont my LT1 shift out of 3rd at 135mph?

Forgot the name of that thing, but it is a small piston, looks like 1 piece of aluminium. Your car may have had another tranny put in it. I believe the Z28s would go into 4th WOT from the factory, many lower perf cars won't.
Good luck, Ed

No limiters in the SS or C5 because both came with Z-rated or better tires. C5 upshifts to 4th somewhere north of 145.
Is there a chance bjamick's '93 was a 120 mph speedo car (non-Zrated from the factory)? Maybe he removed the speed limiter (with almost anyone's program), but the trans is the final limiter. Just conjecturing here.

Well it has a hard top no t-tops, leather interior, steering wheel radio controls, Electric front seats. Does not have the monsoon system. i think the title says firebird but thats for all of them i think.
i have the same problem with my 2 to 3 shift. it's really hurting my times at the track cuz it hits off of the rev limiter twice before shifting. the guy that runs a dyno shop around here told me that i just need to adjust the speed that transmission shifts with a tuner. sounded legitimate to me, but your problem sounds a little worse, but i don't know.
Jegs has it for $119.99, Jegs/B&M part # 130-70249.
Go to Jegs, and type 700R4 in the search box at the top, go to page 3, it is last B&M number listed there. Says 3/4 WOT shift valve.
I went there to look, to just make sure I hadn't lost what's left of my mind.

you do not need a new trans, a stock 700r4 will not shift into 4th gear when you are running 3rd gear out...unless you are about half throttle coming out then it will shift and whenever you gun it again it will go back to 3rd and hit the limiter

It is easy to identify if your trans am was ordered with z-rated tires, there should be a sticker on the drivers side door that'll have that type of info. It will tell you the size and type of tires it rolled out of the factory with. Does it have a high rise spoiler? 150mph speedometer?
If its missing the 150mph speedo, the spoiler, and it wasn't ordered with z-rated tires.... it does have a speed limiter, and thats what its not allowing the shifting....

I had the 94 in my sig up to 150 when it had the 2.73s and that 3-4 shift happened, but I could tell it didnt like it....in fact I could smell the burnt clutch smell after that run, so I tried not to do the WOT 3-4...at any rate...sounds like these guys might be onto it maybe with the tire rating detective work..
the tires dont matter. the speed limiter for the non z rated cars was 110 or 115 from the factory. his problem is ONLY the fact that its a 700r4. they will NOT shift into 4th at wot no matter what tires your car has. if you back off below 3/4 throttle it will shift but not above that. a shift kit will not fix the problem, you need to get that WOT piston. however, expect to go through 3-4 clutch packs faster because they were not designed for the load of wot in 4th.

It will make the 3-4 shift.
