Default Broke Something..

Yesterday me and a friend lined up on a road to mess around. We started from a stop, I launched pretty easy cause I have sticky tires on it, and I wanted to give him a little edge off the line so I can punch it and fly by him. I had it at about 3/4 throttle and then layed into it at about 3500RPM. As soon as I did that, I heard a loud bang, he heard it also cause he was right along side of me, and then it was clanging and bucking back and forth. It felt like the Rear had busted, but it was still moving under it's own power. I got it to a stop, he came over and we looked underneath.
When it's in Drive, the Driveshaft doesn't spin at all, so that factored the Rear out of the problem. Then I got it to limp to my Storage place where I have my other car. It moved, and shifted normally the whole way there. I think it's somewhere in the Tailshaft, any ideas?

You've broken the transmission.

Where abouts in it though.. I got it down to the Tranny, it shifts fine when it is moving..just trying to figure if I killed a Gear, stripped some splines somewhere..

Transmission mount? Has that been checked? If not the sprag could have let go in the transmission.

That sounds like the Tranny Mount, I have done that already a long time ago. Mine is different, everything is stiff and bolted in, just the Drive Shaft doesn't move when it's in gear, so it's internal.

What exactly is the Sprag? I am an Engine guy, I don't really do much with Transmissions..

SSREVENGE : The clunking probably the trans mount is loose enough for it to let the tail end of the tranny bounce on the crossmember. Or, maybe torque arm is clacking up and down due to lose/missing/worn bushing or just no bracket holding it.

MERV : Sorry to hear that merv. Thats an Auto right?

No, it's worse than that, the Driveshaft doesn't move when it's in Gear, so it's broke inside. I already tore that stock mount out of it a long time ago, so I know it's not that. Everything is bolted in pretty stiff.

My guess is something internal. But before you go to all the work on pulling the tranny. I would just pull the back plate off the rear end and inspect everything in there.

As for the tranny, who knows. Its a mess in there with all that goes on. But if this is your problem, sounds like its time for a built 4L60E...or T56..

Side note, it may also be something small in the tranny that broke. I found out the hard way that GM uses plastic peices in there such as the accumilator piston and all. But that made my tranny slip really bad, not clunk.

The Rear is fine, I don't see popping it at 3500RPM while it is already moving, and it's a new Auburn Pro Series. We can hear the clunking around the Tailshaft area, sounds like the Driveshaft is bouncing off of the Torque Arm, or the Exhaust Pipe. Something inside is definately fuckered..

Take the tailshaft housing off and see if there is any play in the output shaft. Probably is plenty of play since it's not turning.

I don't remember if that can be taken off.. I know the LS1 cars can. I am still wondering how I broke it, it's only a Hotcam in the Car..

Sounds like the intermediate sprag went bye, bye on you. I have killed several TH-350's that way. I was told that I was makeing to much torque for the stock intermediate sprag & race to handle.

I've dropped and swapped an Engine, so I am familiar with the Torque Arm. I am going to be doing it in a Storage Unit on Jack Stands, so hopefully it doesn't decide to dump too much fluid everywhere, or do you guys think I should get it on a Lift in the shop..
Anyone have pics of these Sprags and where they are located? A basic cut-away pic would help also..

mine only dropped minimal fluid, enough to clean up with just a shop rag.
