On an A4, the 3.42 is an excellent upgrade. +1 (you dont have to upgrade the carrier if you order it specifically for the 2-series carrier)

Thunder Racing has 3.42 Strange gears for a 2 series carrier for around $225 or so. I just bought a set of these and had them Mikronited. It's been too cold to install them yet though.

Changed my 2.73s to 3.42s. I've said it before, but I would not put money in your rear end. Get a used 3 series and 3.42s. Like said, $225 for a ring and pinion that will work on your 2 series. A little steep if you ask me. I spent $60 for a used 3 series and 3.42s.. $150 to install. That right there is less than a new ring and pinion.

sorry to jack this thread....but what about 3.73s?

i have 2.73s and they suck, I am mostly looking for fun factor.

are 3.42s going to affect my gas mileage city and highway and how does this compare to 3.73s

how is my top end going to be affected by gears?

Does anyone know of a way to check what type of gear you have? I mean without having to take the rear end apart. Im not sure what gear I have in the rear but Im pretty sure its not stock. The way this thing pulls off the line there's no way its a 2.73
I would like to go with a 3.73 I think there might be a 3.42 in there now but I don't know. Car is an A4 auto.

Tell me the last 8 numbers of your VIN and I will tell you what it came with stock, otherwise take the cover off and start counting teeth...or look for the stamping on the ring gear.

gas mileage will go down wont be as good as with the 2.73
reason i dont want a 3.73 is not really gas mileage just top end speed will be not that great. your top end gets effect by the gears because the gears are shorter
