Default Used Converter ??

Guys,

I am looking at picking up a USED Hughes Pro Street 3000 stall for my 97 T/A and it seems like a good price but I have always been leary of buying used converters since you dont know what your buying at times. Anyone ever been burned before or what do I need to look for... It has about 1500 miles on it and has seen some use on the track behind a NA car.

Thanks!
Mike

Bought one used on CZ28 last year. 3200 Stall Protorque.
The converter worked ok, although I am still leary that it is slipping more than it should.
The price was right and he was able to overnight it to me (which is what I needed)
The guy stiffed me for $30 and although I tried for 6 months to get it from him I never did.
(The cost of overnighting a MO to him since he wouldn't take Paypal)
I guess that could happen with any deal though.

My point is that I really wish I had purchased a new torque converter from a reputable dealer.
If you do end up buying the used one, I hope you end up happier with it that I am with mine.

I've got one for sale.....Just kidding....
I have had friends buy used verters but they were all Big name brands like Yank and such. We have all been pretty lucky so far. However, one of my friends sold his old converter (working perfectly) to another guy (another friend) and it went out a month later. So, you never know...Also, unless you know the person/company don't trust how many months or miles it's been in there. It either works or it doesn't (including lock up).

I probably wouldn't do it unless I knew the person. If it was ran with a bad transmission, it could be full of metal shavings that would get flushed back into your tranny. If you send it off to be checked out and freshened up, there goes the good deal.
