hmm from my understanding these hoods are the ones that will allow the use of the ls1 lid:
1.VFN sunoco hood
2.SS style
3.ram air ws6
4.slp ultra-Z

Yeah I remember him cutting the hood but I thought he redid the lid to fit under the stock hood. I cant remember there are so many of these lid threads. Someone on here did it, do a search.

merv did a great deal of modding to get that lid under his hood(good job BTW)however he did not utilize the shoud for the lid.
streetwarrior96 did on his formula and he used the ws6 ramair Lt1 hood!
from my measurements on my friends ws6 and my z28 there is room if the z had the inner structure modded as merv did or to get an aftermarket hood that has this mod done in the mold, the u shaped brace that the catch for the latch is on is skinnier so the lid will slide right by to close and of sourse with the raise of the inlets give the extra room needed for the top of the lid.

Stock LT1 hood won't work with the LS1 LID. I know Merv fabbed a lot tho. I have the complete stock LS1 intake on my car right now. Of course I'm doing the front end conversion so I have the LS1 hood to go with it.

I know for a fact the stock LT1 camaro hood will not work with this air intake setup. It just does'nt clear, I personally tried before I changed my hood.

this is what I have.

Ignore the messing frontend lol.

Here is the details on mine..
The LS1 Radiator Cover will not work on the LT1 Camaro Stock Hood, not happenin. You can see in the pics how I got mine in, several people have done this. It clears the Hood by about 1/2" on the top of the Curve right before the MAF. The only tight spot is where the Radiator is dropped back, and it kinda kinks one of the Coolant Lines against the ABS. I am looking for a way to get rid of that, so if you have any ideas/ways that it can be done for cheap, pm me.

Has anyone tested this versus a good CAI or factory ram air setup to see if there is really any gain?

note sure, but I just bought the slp lid and the full cold air package with the scoop (air foil ducting) that goes under the car. So I'm sure that's better than just a conical filter.

I am running my factory intake setup (WS6) with an Accel Cool Blue air filter. I took the filter out for a couple passes and gained nothing.

yeah you gained something, a chance for dirt and other crap to enter your motor. I know people do this and once or twice is not a big deal. I don't suggest you to keep doing that tho.

No sh|t sherlock. I did do it once and obviously will not again. It was at the dragstrip, not motoing a dirt road course out in the country like Bo Duke.

I'm just saying I don't see how a gain can be had from going to the LS1 setup when I had my system flowing as free as it could possibly be and gained nothing. My hood could not possibly be that restrictive.
