Just get one from Auto zone, life time warranty and be done with it. Thats what I wish I had done the first time, ended up going that route that second time. Bought a mini starter from jegs, peace of **** lasted a year and then started giving me problems, have a A-zone replacement for the last 3 years or so, no issues.
Yes, starters are rebuildable. I just went through this with my 297,000 mile dd. It still had what apeared to be the original starter and I wasn't crazy about swapping it out for a crappy assembly line rebuilt unit. Not to mention, the cheapest rebuilt unit I found was $130. I fixed mine for $23 by replacing the starter drive. The brushes and bearings still looked great, so it should outlast the truck now.
The problem is finding the parts. The parts stores around here don't carry parts like that anymore. They want to sell you the whole unit. I ended up ordering my starter drive online.
You could also check your local yellow pages for a starter and alternator repair shop. It would cost more than fixing it yourself, but you would have the advantage of keeping your original starter.
