Default thermostat question...

I've been reading up on the 160 degree thermostat modification and from what i understand to get the best results you have to do a little tweaking. For example the thing that has come up most is that you have to set the fans to come on earlier. Well, as a result of my computer program my fans are on 24-7 but it keeps my temp right at 180 and never gets any higher except at the track. It doesn't climb when i race on the street. So my question is... am i set to go with a thermostat or do i need to adjust something? thanks.

Well, if you have your fans on all the time, then you'll probably run at about 170 with the 160 degree thermo. I have the 160 degree thermo and sometimes my fans will stay on forever without a tune...(I don;t know why) anyways it stays around 165-170. When the fans operates like it's supposed to stock the temps will climb to the red in traffic like normal, but when cruising at 45+ it stays at around 165-170 also. IF you've already tuned the fans to turn on for it then your good to go, even if not, it's still a good investment and can't hurt anything. with a 160 thermostat you can probably change your tune to have the fans turn on at 175 or 180, that way your temps will be what you have now without having to leave your fans on 24/7 and wear them out like you are now.

If your fans are on all the time, like mine are now, that means your thermo is too high. I THOUGHT my car had a 160 in it, but it was a bad gauge lol I'm running 190 from what my ECM temps are reading. So, as a result, my tune for 160 keeps my fans on. I unplugged one because it was too annoying.

Yes, you're set for a 160. Just be prepared that the one you get won't look like the one you take out (most likely). Most places, and like Hypertech, just sell you the GenI style thermostat. The LT1 is a bit diff. Some guys here have said the GenI in a GenII doesn't matter. Personally, I'm going to get a GenII style from Advanced Auto, you can order it off their website for $25 (after shipping, to me at least). Otherwise it's $36 for the SLP brand. $20 for the Hypertech GenI style. Which if you do that, just goto the local auto store and ask for a 160 for a TPI motor heh
