Default Valve Spring adjustment help

SO yeah, any help here would be great, I've had these things adjusted three times already and they still arn't right, 1st time they were way to tight and would "seize" up the motor, 2nd time it had a popping comming from the intake, and now the cars sounds right, but it won't move faster than 5mph and it seems to be loading up and choking out. now, my question is, with the cyclinder at TDC, the rockers need to be at zero lash correct? and is that up and down lash? or side to side? Im going to try my hand at adjusting these things so i can drive the beast for the 1st time with the new cam

it depends if you have a solid roller or hyd cam. If it's still hyd then you need to make sure that the cam is on the base circle of cyl. that you're adjusting, or just put it on tdc. Then slowly adjust the rocker by hand until you have 0 lash (up and down movement). then you need to take your wrench/socket and turn the adjusting nut an addition 1/2 turn/180 degrees. That should give you a ball park of about 0.018-0.020 in. crush on your lifter plunger which is ideal.
