Default Port size for heads

After looking at a lot of head porters it seems that there port sizes differ but the flow numbers are still very close so my question would be does that extra port volume matter. If I can get good flow from 190-200cc why would there be any need to go higher.

Also note this thread is not specific to any porter so lets not turn this into a flame war about whos better just looking for good answers.

I 'think' it has to do with velocity.

The smaller port moves the air faster and produces the same/better numbers in some case.

Dont quote me on that though.

Tony.

You are going to get folks who swear by both sides of this argument and in the end the post will be basically pointless.

I am not trying to criticize you for posting it, just saying you will get get no resolution to the question.

That said, same track same day my little 350 with "small" heads faired very well against bigger motors with bigger heads, like 2-4 tenths and 1-3mph better.

Look for results and not bench racers. You want to run mid 9s full weight with a blower then I think all you need is a big hole to cram air through, for NA and drivable though IMO you need some finesse.

I was gonna say something about port velocity but hit cancel cuz I didn't know if I was going to be close or not. I think it's kind of a gray area. I am running 2.00"/1.55" valves in my LT1 heads and my LS1 heads on that idea. It's not really something you can measure I don't think. Just think of it like a water hose and then you put your thumb over the end. You got lots of water just kinda coming out and then you do that and the water goes a considerable distance.
