Default while driving runs cool at idle gets hot?

I have a 97 lt1 camaro that goes to the 240 mark just after sitting at a stoplight for a couple of minutes but then on open roads without stopping it goes back to the first marker which is like 180. Confused on what to do. A friend told me to ground a wire to the fan and manualy turn it on when it goes up to 180. What do you think this problem could be?

thanks,
Brett

start by making sure youve got water in it, then flush it if you do, the check the water pump.

I flushed out the antifreeze a couple weeks ago and put the dexcool 50/50 mixture in so it no longer gets hot while driving now but only when im stopped is when it gets hot.

Are the fans not coming on by themselves?

I would also recommend checking to see if there is anything in front of the radiator; leaves, trash, bugs, etc. Secondly, when you drained and refilled the system did you bleed out the air through the bleed screws?

Mine used to do that, then i got the 160 thermostat + pcm tune to turn the fans on sooner. the car's temp does not move from one quarter the way up, ever.

One should run when you have the AC on. Then both when it reaches a certain temperature. Turn your AC on and see if it turns on.

the one comes on when i have the ac on but the one where it reaches a certain temperature doesnt seem to come on because it will just keep going into the red zone if i stay in traffic for to long.

The funny thing is my car never seemed to get hot like that if i can recall before i got my tranny rebuilt in March where they had to take the tranny out, do you think that possibly the guy who took out the tranny disconnected a relay to the fan or something?

If the fans are turning on then this is normal.

A lot of people aren't aware that the stock lt1 cooling system will often run to 235 sitting in traffic. 235 is when the 2nd fan turns on and in the hot summer months this is often what's needed to stop the temp from going up any further.

Reducing the fan temps or installing a switch is a good solution.

160 TStat didn't 'fix' it?? Because that's why you either use a manual fan switch(Which you have) or get your fan temps tuned. JUST thermostat won't do squat since the fans will still turn on @ their factory temps. Me, I'm sitting at the opposite right now. I need to get a 160 TStat, where as my fans are already turning on way early heh At least my car doesn't get above 200 right now because of that.

Get the 160* thermostat and a tune to turn the fans on early.

+1 to this. I'm telling you, the only time my temp moves up at all is when I'm in traffic for more than 5 minutes, even then its just to the first notch. Normally its just slightly below that. the 160 thermo + tune will fix it.

Yup, if you have an existing custom tune. Have them add this. (should be cheap)
If you don't have one, get one and pick up some HP while you are at it.
