Get rid of as much as you can tolerate. Any and all weight helps. If you look at something and say "well it does not weight that much.... or maybe I'll need it later" you wont get far. Rotating weight is worse than dead weight ex. lightweight rims, aluminum driveshaft, stock 10 bolt...) A great thing to do is remove A/C, spare tire/jack, back seats, relocate the battery to the trunk.... Get the weight OFF the front end (pin on hood, k-member...) Look in the drag racing section as there is a great write-up on weight loss... I have my A4 vert down to around 3300 at the moment and am looking to lose a lot more.

Most of those people are probably running carpetless cars. Thats around 100-150lbs right there, or more with the sound deadening. Also, electricless! Windows, locks, the works. The Formula spoiler weighs about 50lbs less as well, since it's hollow, as apposed to the solid T/A wing. I assume the Z28 is much like the Formula in that aspect, compared the SS then. And don't forget to go tubular dude! By that I mean KMember and Trans Crossmember. Alu drive shaft, but that's not a big over-all weight loss, but a good drive train rotating weight loss.

If you're running 13.5 stock, or 90% stock, then you're well on your way to a fast car.

common weight reductions. keep in mind that some of these are extreme for a daily driver. for example, it wouldnt be a great idea to remove your bumper supports, you might need them.

Weights as of so far I started out at 3805 with me in there so the car should be around 3650 with out me so mine should be around 3400 now. thats with a full roll bar in there and extra added weight of a supercharger. I didnt add up the weights of the spare tire and rear seats.
