Default Engine Help...

Alright, I have a '96 Trans Am with an LT1 with about 96,200 miles on it. I've noticed that from around 500-1300 rpm's the car will kind of bog down and not have it's full performance. I thought it was the fuel filter getting clogged so I changed it about an hour ago and still nothing changed. I know it couldn't be the fuel pump because that was replaced around 35K miles. My Dad was telling me either a valve might be bad or my opti-spark might be going out but he thinks it's more of a bad valve then the opti-spark. When the car reaches over 2000 rpm's, the car has just about all it's performance. Has anyone had similar experiences or might have an idea what might be wrong. I'm thinkin' if it's the head(s), then I'll just have the heads and intake manifold ported.

Worn plugs and wires can cause a low end miss like you describe.

I would start with the normal tune-up items like plugs and wires. A bad plug wire can act just like the syptoms you descibed.

Yeah well I just replaced th spark plugs and the fuel filter. I think next I'll just go ahead and buy an opti spark. Should I buy the whole thing or just the cap and coil?

You mean cap and rotor. No don't buy an optispark yet. Don't throw parts at what you don't know. Do you have a weak coil? Did you change wires too?

instead of just saying it cant be the fuel pump, why dont you screw a gauge on the thing and make sure. on your opti question i do it all or nothing.

you might also try cleaning your injectors thier ability to meter precisely will have a huge impact on low speed perf and idle quality.
