Default cut out question

I just ordered a cutout (summit manual wing nut) and cant wait for it to get here. My question is if I cut a 2-3' part of my exhuast out (where the cut out will go) would it sound the same as the cut out will , and would the performance be the same? I kinda what to know what Im in for, and I can get a piece of pipe welded back in if I dont like it.

Well if your doing it because you think it will sound better then you'll find out the cutout wont sound that great(with headers it might sound okay). but I believe you can pick up like 1 hp if that

WTF Mark? You ever see dyno spect with a cutout? You can gain 8 or more HP, they are usually worth .1 in the 1/4 with it open. Yes you lose backpressure, but it is for offroad use only. You can put a straight pip back in place, but it would be best to just leave it and not use it if you dont like.

well the cut-out being before the cat will net you more hp, but will you will loose alot of ground clearane IMO. I put my cutout in the I pipe right before it goes over the axle and it has great ground clearance. I also did an electric QTP cutout motor and there is a floor board plug where I ran the wire to the swith inside the car. While you throwing the cutout in, why not just gut the cat while your at it?

' = Feet, so you don't want to cut 2-3 feet out lol As for the sound question, I think it'd sound really weird with a 2-3" gap, because you'd have high pressure exhaust breathing into an open pipe. I think it would cause echoing in the rest of the exhaust and sound all goofy. I'd think to get a good idea you'd have to cut at least 7" off and then block off the opening to the rest of the exhaust. Performance varies from car to car, mod to mod. I've seen one guy on here actually lose 1hp with it open heh Then again, some have seen 10+hp.

Its got a Magnaflow hi flow cat right now that Im pretty happy with. Is it still worth gutting? The car is at the stock height, since I dont know the size of the cutout its hard to visualize the amount of clearance. I will just end up waiting for the cut out to come in since I didnt get to the cutting this weekend. Good point on the sound issue too. I guess Im just trying to find the best location for it. Like I said Im open to any oppinions on it, as of right now before the cat is where Im thinking of putting it.

put some low grip loctite on the wingnuts, or check them a few times a week. My cutout cap fell off, I was using the summit unit.

IMO any form of cat, will rob hp. Id still gut it, or pull it out and swap with a stock hollowed cat.

When I had one I had it mounted just in front of the rear tire. It was easy to access there without having to lift the car or anything. Also then the exhaust gases were at the rear of the car, as I like to cruise with the windows down, and might have been slightly quieter in the cabin with it in the back instead of up front.

I have mine mounted underneath the passenger back seat. There is a perfect spot for it to fit like it was ment to go there.

From what Ive seen I wanted to put mine too far up. Im going to go after the cat now. My only question is now, what did you all notice et or trap wise in the 1/4?

I bought the summit cutout as well, and i hear what your saying.

I had a guy from my dad's company cut out the real part of the cutout (the flange). Just take a hacksaw if you don't have a sawzaw and cut where the weld. The straight piping remaining from the cutout will be thrown out.

Then trace that piece with a marker onto the y pipe and cut out a hole. Weld that flange/piece to the y pipe. It looks much cleaner looking and you have custom exhaust technically. Either way you'll have to weld it on and this looks better imo and eliminates having to hack up the y pipe. (banding clamps suck and leave room for things to leak).

I will admit, i benefit from a dad who owns a fabrication and tool and die company, so maybe that's why this seemed very easy to do, nothing like having a professional welder on hand. I still think what i explained is very doable for the weekend mechanic.
